Consider the price of the article to be 100. Then, the equation you get from the first statement is:

(100 + m) - (m/4)% of (100 + m) = 100 + m/4

Solving for m, we get 200

So if she marks up by m/2 that is 100%, then the price will be 100 + 100 = 200. After m/6% discount, that is 33.33% discount, the selling price will be 133.33%. And so profit will be 33.33%. I think this is only logical approach. Any other logical approach means that you have to guess the value of m. I tried guessing from m = 400%, this gives a discount of 100% so does not make sense. We need to go lower. With quick trial and error you can find the value to be 200. But I still think using equation is simple and gives answer fast only.

The XAT is arguably the most difficult MBA entrance exam in India, more than even the CAT. This year, XAT 2018 exam that was held on 7th January was, for the first time ever, conducted online.
